Mayan Calendar

This was a commission for a project based on the Mayan calender. I might be going out on a limb with this one, but the fact the the Mayan calender concludes on Dec 21st 2012 probably has more to do with the fact that having created a calender that spanned from 100 odd years BC to present day they simply thought "surely that will do for now, we'll pick it up again later".
